Actual stills

June 24, 2009

From the beginning and end of Hitchhiker. Danielle and Austin. Director of photography is Dani; the gorgeous lighting is courtesy of Erick and Stephan, an Arri 300, a Kino Diva 400, and the Sacramento Valley.

What’s amazing about films (short, feature, animated or live action) is that you go in with the seed of an idea and everybody who comes onto it makes it better for having been there. It becomes something you couldn’t have done on your own… a real group effort.

After this weekend we’ll be done shooting and start editing the footage together for Hitchhiker. I’ll start posting drawings again after that… I promise… once I get some sleep…

More film stuff.

This is a storyboard-ish inspirational drawing I was working on tonight for our short. I’m really happy with it - I can look at it and say “this is what I want the short to feel like,” nevermind that the colors won’t work on an actual person and the drawing only bears vague resemblance to the actress playing our girl.

It FEELS to me like driving in the country at night, the patches of hot asphalt air mixing in through the car window with the cool breeze off the fields. The smell of alfalfa. Moths hitting the windshield. None of these things are going into the short, but they are what anchors me to it. If I’m thinking of them and how to make the footage we shoot feel like that, I’m on the right track.

Julie, Julie

April 1, 2009

I’m going to be sneaky about this sketch post and point you in the direction of Julie, Julie, a short film directed by my friend Liam Creighton. It’s the story of an architect who, after being hit by a car, can speak only French. It’s actually about much more serious things, too, like being married and communication.

Since she’s an architect, she draws and does architect-y things, and when you see her sketching, those are my prop drawings!

Go check it out…!
